One of the biggest draws of cruise travel is the food. Cruise ships are famous for their midnight buffets, 24 hour room service, lavish dining rooms, specialty dining such as sushi bars, and even entirely food-themed cruises. Food poisoning can ruin your cruise and it can be life-threatening. Hundreds of cruise ship passengers have become ill in foodborne illness outbreaks on cruise ships in 2012. If you have been harmed by food poisoning on a cruise ship, please talk to Hickey Law Firm, P.A. right away.
Improper Food Handling and Unsanitary Conditions
Cruise ships feed thousands of people all day long. That is no excuse for poor sanitation and poor food storage and handling. In fact, it is all the more reason to maintain impeccable policies and procedures. Foodborne illness spreads faster and more easily in environments where there are lots of people cooped up together in a small space. Cruise ships that fall behind on sanitation and food handling are ripe for food poisoning outbreaks.
Norovirus 2012
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 11 outbreaks of norovirus, a type of food poisoning, on cruise ships as of mid-September. The CC report only includes cruise ships which are covered by its Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) and carry 100 or more passengers.
